Founder questions
Venture studio, software agency or accelerator: which should a first-time founder choose?
It depends on how far along the idea is. A software agency builds what you specify, an accelerator runs a programme of mentoring and introductions, usually in exchange for equity, and a venture studio works with you from the idea, through validation, to the build. If the idea is not validated yet, validate it before paying anyone to build it.
How they compare
| Software agency | Accelerator | Venture studio | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you get | A product built to your specification | A programme: mentoring, network, often funding | Help from the idea through validation, design and build |
| How you pay | Cash, usually for time and materials | Usually equity, sometimes a fee | Varies by studio: cash, equity or both |
| Who decides what to build | You | You, with mentors | You, with the studio testing it first |
| Best when | You know exactly what to build | You have traction and want to grow fast | You have an idea and need to know whether it is worth building |
The question that decides it
Ask whether you know, with evidence, that people want this and will pay for it. If yes, and you can specify the product, an agency is a fair choice. If you already have traction, an accelerator can speed you up. If not yet, spend a little on validation before you spend a lot on building.
Where FiftyKnots fits
FiftyKnots is a venture studio in Cape Town. You start with a free Idea Score, then pay one phase at a time with a fixed fee per phase. Nothing is built before the design is approved and the build has a fixed quote, and FiftyKnots almost never takes equity.
Questions founders ask
- What is the difference between a venture studio and an accelerator?
- An accelerator runs a programme of mentoring and introductions for startups that already exist, usually in exchange for equity. A venture studio works with you from the idea itself, through validation, to building the product.
- Should a non-technical founder use an agency?
- Only once the idea is validated and you can specify what to build. An agency builds what you ask for; it does not usually test whether it is worth building.
- Does FiftyKnots take equity?
- Almost never, and never as a condition of working with FiftyKnots. Founders pay a fixed fee per phase.
